Artist reception and book signing
Meet Oakland artist Gabby La La at a reception for Five Bats, her first solo exhibition of watercolor paintings, on view at Evergreen from November 21 through December 16.
Five Bats is a watercolor meditation on a Chinese pun. In Chinese, the word for bat sounds the same as the word for good fortune and blessing, so five circling bats stand for an abundance of luck arriving from every direction.
In her own words:
“For me, bats have always been associated with vampires and danger. I would never want to cuddle with a bat, but I love adjusting my view of them from something I fear, into something I would hope to interact with. This collection is my way of befriending Bats and welcoming them into my world.”
Come by the reception to meet the artist, see the paintings and celebrate the launch of her new graphic memoir with a book signing. Gabby will also have holiday gifts she made for sale.
