Meet the Artist: Marianne Betterly — Day of the Dead

Sunday, November 1, 2026 · 4–6pm
Day of the Dead reception

Meet San Francisco photographer and poet Marianne Betterly on Day of the Dead. Marianne's show Day of the Dead captures Día de los Muertos processions across San Francisco, Oakland, and Mexico — a tradition she has documented for 15 years.

In her own words:

"Day of the Dead is the time of year when families welcome back the souls of deceased relatives and friends with food, music, procession and prayer. As a photographer I am attracted to the costumes and candlelight reflecting reverence for those loved ones, now gone. Here in the Bay Area, men and women paint their faces, dress like skeletons or ghostly figures with wild headdresses and carry candles or lanterns through the streets of the Mission District, San Francisco and Fruitvale District, Oakland on November 1 or 2."

Come by the reception on the holiday itself. Meet the artist, sit with the images, and share a glass of wine.

No tickets — just come by.
