Join award-winning environmental journalist Mark Schapiro for a conversation about his book, Seeds of Resistance.
Ten thousand years after humans figured out how to stop wandering and plant crops, veteran investigative journalist Mark Schapiro plunges into the battle underway for control of seeds, the ground-zero ingredient of our food supply. Three quarters of the seed varieties on earth in 1900 had been driven to extinction by 2015. Schapiro takes us to the frontlines of a struggle over the seeds that remain as the disruptive impacts of climate change accelerate and the stakes to our food security rise. He reveals the implications of industry consolidation, when more than half of all commercially-traded seeds are controlled by just four agri-chemical companies.
Along the way, he pulls back the curtain on the vulnerabilities of industrial agriculture to climate change, and dives deep into the increasingly powerful movement that is resisting those trends and pursuing more regenerative alternatives. His investigation is filled with colorful characters who defy war and the powers-that-be to find and protect the seeds that offer our best options for long-term survival.
