Join Berkeley native and longtime American publisher Steve Wasserman for a conversation about his debut memoir-in-essays, Tell Me Something, Tell Me Anything, Even If It's a Lie (Heyday, 2024).
In thirty essays originally published in publications like the New Republic, The Nation, The American Conservative, The Progressive, The Village Voice, and the Los Angeles Times, Wasserman delivers an account of his awakening as a writer, thinker, and cultural observer. The collection ranges over politics, literature, and the tumults of a world in upheaval, drawing on his friendships with Susan Sontag, Christopher Hitchens, Gore Vidal, and Jacqueline Onassis, and his encounters with Fidel Castro, W.G. Sebald, Daniel Ellsberg, Huey Newton, and Orson Welles.
Spanning five decades in publishing and journalism, the book charts a life at the intersection of politics and letters.

Steve Wasserman is publisher of Heyday, an independent, nonprofit press founded in 1974 in Berkeley, California. A graduate of UC Berkeley, Wasserman is former literary editor of the Los Angeles Times, past publisher of Hill & Wang and the Noonday Press at Farrar, Straus & Giroux, former editorial director of Times Books at Random House, and editor at large for Yale University Press.
