Join us for the closing reception of Katie Hawkinson's Flora and Fauna, on view at Evergreen from August 15 through October 4. Come meet the artist, hear about the work, share a glass of wine, and see the show one last time before it comes down.
The natural world has always held Katie's attention. For most of her adult life as a painter it has been her muse in the form of abstraction — listening to the rustle and chirp of the world and trying to depict something of what it feels like to be alive. Color relationships, the play of light and dark, and the dance between simple and complex form have engaged her curiosity.
Beginning around 2020, her paintings changed to reflect more closely what she sees in nature. Specific details in the structure and posture of certain plants speak to her — and the endurance and ecological benefits of many weeds compel her to honor them. More recently, Katie has returned to working with clay after many years, building seed pods and functional vessels inspired by the same subjects.

Katie Hawkinson is a Bay Area painter. She taught drawing in the Architecture Department at UC Berkeley for twenty years and has taught painting in the Department of Continuing Studies at Stanford University since 2007. See more of her work at katiehawkinson.com.
